Reflection time. Topic 1: Visiting or living there?

After reading through Valerie and Brenden’s blog (both links are below), I felt that our posts are largely similar in the way of explaining how digital visitors and residents are, the behaviours and how are the similarities to us. We are probably a little of residents and visitors.

I say that because my generation are more of the ‘play outdoors kids’ but with the adoption of technology advancement taken in stages. Stages here I mean we dont jump straight into the smartphone, smart computers and tablets bandwagon like the kids do today.

Just an example, for us, we have been through step by step with old school brands like Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Motorola. We see them evolve and create interesting mobiles with many functions where tech was not so advanced back then. Wifi was not a necessity back then and most certainly alien, and connecting on the internet would mean dialing up to the landline phone with a wire, which annoyingly gets a connection cut every time somebody calls as landlines are still the primary communication tool in the house.

For us back then, higher-tiered technology like even a mobile phone was seen as a privilege to own and have, not so of a daily essential. It’s not only until the late 90s to early 2000s where mobile phones are more affordable and little by little everyone starts carrying one. We still think it is more fun going outside to play with friends instead of staring at our then blocks of small-screened mobile phones with not much entertainment functions like they have today on smartphones. Nostalgic isnt it.

In short, we may not be as digitally inclined back then but we certainly do now. We live in the time period where social media was having their debut, wifi becoming widely available and Apple beginning to change the mobile market with the iphone. We adopt them as we go along.

As everything is shifting to online platforms, we to stay competitive, have to adopt these technology and behaviours to connect with our friends, for business and school-related activities and gathering information on a world-wide basis. We are all visitors at a point of time, but with suitable environment, we live there now.
